Trade These Weekly Options in Small Accounts

Weekly options are ideal for smaller accounts.

Why? First, they are very, very low risk, an ideal way not just to protect your capital – that is true for an options selling strategy, but to keep it flexible.r

Second, you are paying only one commission, when you sell your contracts, and since you goal is to have the put or call expire worthless, there is no commission to close the position.

Third, there are many names with weekly options where you can get into a position without using all your capital – Ford, General Motors, JP Morgan, Bank of America and many more.

Fourth, if you like a stock but to own it efficiently would tie up most of your capital, you can sell puts against it every week.

And, if own a stock in that account you never trade, you can sell weekly calls against those core assets and increase the real amount of capital you are using to create that extra paycheck.

I like selling weekly options as part of any income strategy because as you can clearly see risks are minimized in a weekly options income strategy.

And this strategy, using simple tools, simple positions, can be repeated every week, over and over again exploiting one or a handful of ideas to put cash in your pocket.

So what weekly options look good right now?

Here are several names that I follow and trade closely that are ideal for selling weekly options in smaller accounts.

  • The market is rewarding stocks with real growth, such as the automakers. That is not a joke, I was just out at the GM Flit Michigan Assembly plant where they put together pickup trucks and they are running three shifts and maxed out of capacity.  You can collect nice premium from both General Motors (GM) and Ford  (F) weekly’s these days.
  • The market hates banks – always a good sign when there is a unanimous opinion against something, means it’s time to go long. But right now is a great time to be selling weekly puts on JP Morgan (JPM) and Bank of America (BAC).
  • Commodities are a great place to find weekly options with nice premiums. We’ve been trading in the energy patch with drilling companies like Transocean Ltd. (RIG), in precious metals with specialized stocks like the gold miner Newmont Mining (NEM) and even the agricultural space with a company like Potash (POT).
  • Finally, we’ve been able to generate income from the technology sector including companies like Corning (GLW), SanDisk (SNDK) and Cree Inc. (CREE).

Think about selling weekly options even in smaller accounts.

It will make Friday feel like an “Extra Pay Day” every single week – this is short term cash, in your pocket.  You don’t have to wait for a dividend or a stock to appreciate.

To my mind your only risk is leaving cash, that extra paycheck, on the table.
