This Is My Last Article

Ok, sorry for the click-bait title, but I wanted to let you know that I’m headed out for vacation and John Hutchinson will be covering for me.  So this will be my last article…for a couple of weeks.

As I pack and get ready for the trip, I’m reminded that things aren’t as bad as politicians would have us believe.  Sure, there’s always something to be negative about, but I’m reminded that other countries in the world are still going through covid protocols.  The amount of paperwork, testing, and extra insurance makes me long for pre-pandemic travel.  We no longer have lockdowns like in China and vaccines are readily available for those who want one.

As I went to the bank to exchange currency, I was reminded that the dollar is strong against other countries.  And then as I looked ahead at the prices of goods where I’m visiting, I was reminded that while inflation may have peaked for the U.S., it is still going up in other countries.

It’s easy to lose perspective in life, trading, etc.  Things aren’t perfect, but this isn’t a repeat of 2008 or the 1980s.

If you want to trade in the direction of the trend, it helps to look at some of the best-performing stocks and sectors over a few different timeframes.  Let’s see what has been performing well over the last month, quarter, and year.

Looking at the average gains over the last 1 month, 3 months and 12 months show that Utilities and Energy are still the best performing sectors over multiple timeframes and will likely continue as long as inflation remains an issue.

Within the Energy sector, the best performing stock over the last 1 month is Marathon Oil, (MRO).

ConocoPhillips (COP) is a nice runner-up.

If you’re a contrarian and you want to look at one of the worst performing S&P 500 stocks over the last month, thinking it is time for a turnaround, look no further than NVIDIA (NVDA).  Tech stocks have a lot of headwinds if interest rates continue to rise, but you never know. Maybe one of the worst performers can turn around and be one of the best.

Can NVIDIA stop the decline or is there more pain ahead?

Have a great weekend and I wish you prosperous trading while I’m away.
